The Position

The Department of Publications at Zaytuna College in Berkeley, CA, is seeking a Digital Growth Manager, whose primary responsibility will be the digital growth of the print-and-online publication, Renovatio. This is a new position created to grow the audience of the seven-year-old, well-established publication.

Applicants must be avidly interested in working at the intersection of technology, communications, data, and design at a publication devoted to the exploration of religion and ideas. We seek someone with a data-centric background and experience to lead the promotion and growth efforts of the Renovatio website and e-newsletter communications. The position reports to the Director of Publications.

The Digital Growth Manager must possess the ability to read and digest academic essays, as well as podcast and video conversations among scholars, on religion, philosophy, literature, history, and other fields in order to convey Renovatio’s editorial vision, which is to be a place for scholarship that is both rigorous and accessible for a literary audience.

The Digital Growth Manager must be comfortable executing digital tasks that arise day-to-day as an integral member of a small editorial team. The Digital Growth Manager will be responsible for increasing traffic to the Renovatio website by implementing web, social media, e-newsletters, online advertising, as well as SEO and UX strategies.

Applicants must possess the tools of digital communication and the ability to understand and leverage traffic analytics on the website, leverage e-newsletter results to improve response and conversion rates and use other digital metrics to help Renovatio’s content reach a wider and more engaged audience.

The ideal candidate is one who understands the mission of Renovatio and has the requisite skills in data-driven digital growth and wants to apply that skill set to grow the audience of educated and literate readers.

Essential Functions

The following are the primary day-to-day responsibilities for this position. These are not exclusive or all-inclusive.

  1. Oversee all aspects of the growth of the Renovatio website, from capturing and monitoring metrics, to enhancing UX features, to managing new and existing content
  2. Use data-centric decision-making to manage Renovatio’s email newsletters, grow its subscriber lists, and increase conversion rates
  3. Work closely with the Director of Publications, Managing Editor, and Social Media Editor to rotate homepage content, post new content, and promote the website through executing data-driven strategies for facilitating organic web growth and placing effective web and online advertising
  4. Work closely with Renovatio’s Social Media Editor to enhance the synergy between Renovatio’s website and social media platforms (primarily X and YouTube) and to develop strategies for growth and expansion
  5. Support Renovatio’s podcast through working with the editorial team and audio editors to manage the production and all aspects of its promotion online
  6. Follow and be aware of scholars, publications, and institutions that share areas of interest with Renovatio and execute strategies to engage them online to promote Renovatio
  7. Plan and implement all digital advertising efforts
  8. Perform initial assessment of digital data on website and email platform and regularly submit reports tracking data to the Director of Publications.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree and training—at work or in schooling—in digital media or online publishing.
  • At least 3-5 years of professional experience in digital media or publishing environment

Required Competencies

  • Basic but keen eye for on-screen design with an appreciation for whitespace and good typography
  • Proven ability to learn content management systems to manage, edit, and publish online content, and working knowledge of HubSpot a plus
  • Excellent oral and written communication and reading comprehension skills; editing experience a plus
  • Demonstrated knowledge and at least 1-2 years’ experience in using analytics and metrics for website, e-newsletters, YouTube, X, to grow and improve online experiences
  • Strong familiarity with the variety of essays and articles, Q&As, videos, and podcasts, on the Renovatio website
  • Experience in building and engaging with online audiences on social media
  • Experience in working with rich multi-media content; Photoshop and other Adobe Creative Suite experience preferred
  • Audio and video editing skills not required—but a plus.

Employment Requirements

  • Legally authorized to work in the United States
  • Successful completion of a background check
  • Flexibility to work some evenings and weekends, especially during major postings of content on website.

Location

While Zaytuna College, and its Publications department, are located in Berkeley, this position can be based in Berkeley or remote.
